Scenario planning: Reflecting on cases of actionable knowledge

Scenario planning has a long history of academic inquiry and practice in numerous fields industries; however, its future as tool to manage strategic uncertainty may well have reached an impasse. While the community perpetuates view that field is characterized by methodological chaos, practitioner concerned only with how scenario can help solve organizational problem. This paper argues would benefit from adopting philosophical orientation “pragmatic” where theoretical sophistication should be traded-off against need produce practical outcome addresses specific enable more academics generate new knowledge was “useful” rather than “generalizable.” Adopting Pragmatic Philosophy also address three primary issues asserted literature on process, content, implementation scenario-informed strategizing. position provides reflective account narrative theory moved effectively into illustrating author's commitment developing scenario-based actionable knowledge, high levels implementable validity, instrumental impact organizations.
